A Member's Nutrition Changes
Empower Fitness member, Dosha Brown, is full of vitality and enthusiasm these days. And she should be... after losing 59 pounds and moving from a size 16 to size 8 over the last two years! When we asked Dosha what her "secrets" were, she was happy to share the many nutritional changes she has made. Dosha says that her #1 change was cutting out sugar, especially soda. She replaced soda with "Sassy Water" (made by simply adding 1 sliced cucumber, lemon, some fresh ginger root, and mint leaves to 2 quarts of water). Another major nutritional change was in changing her meals: instead of 3 large meals a day, she eats 4-5 smaller meals. She reports she is very focused on portion size and measures out everything she eats. Her snacks now consist of fresh fruits and veggies and nuts. Dinner is usually a baked protein (meat or chicken) with salad and vegetables.
Dosha emphasizes that these changes were no "quick fixes", but actually lifestyle changes that took time to incorporate into her routine. She has also committed the time to planning and preparing her food on a daily basis. But it has all been worth it, she says, for the improvements in her health: she can now easily walk up stairs and no longer needs to use her asthma inhaler. Plus she feels better than she has in years, and with people constantly telling her how good she looks, Dosha says there is no going back!
